Barefoot Shoes For The Elderly - A Necessity
This blog is based on a scientific study conducted by Erin Futrell and Julia Chevan, titled “Effects of Long-Term Minimal Footwear Use on Fall-Risk and Fall Incidence in Older Adults,” published in December 2025.
The study examined whether wearing minimalist footwear could influence balance, mobility, and fall risk among adults over the age of 65.
Researchers divided participants into two groups. One group wore minimalist shoes, while the control group continued with their usual footwear habits.
Participants completed intervention or control activities five times per week for the first 16 weeks and then at least twice per week for the remainder of the one-year study period.
To evaluate results, researchers measured fall risk using the Mini-Balance Evaluation Systems Test (Mini-BESTest), a widely used assessment tool for balance performance.
The findings were noteworthy.
After the first 16 weeks, 28.6% of participants in the minimalist footwear group achieved a Minimal Detectable Change (MDC), defined as an improvement of more than 3.5 points on the Mini-BESTest. In comparison, only 3.3% of participants in the control group reached the same benchmark.
At the end of the one-year study, 23.1% of the minimalist footwear group continued to achieve the MDC, compared to just 7.4% of the control group.
Researchers also observed that participants wearing minimalist shoes experienced fewer falls, had a lower proportion of fallers overall, and took longer to experience a fall compared to those in the control group.
What can we learn from this?
Exercise and movement training are known to improve balance, coordination, and the connection between the brain and muscles. However, this study suggests that those benefits may be enhanced when combined with minimalist shoes India that allow the feet to move and function more naturally.
For many older adults, a single fall can significantly impact mobility, confidence, and independence. Supporting natural movement and maintaining lower-body strength can play an important role in long-term health and quality of life.
This is one reason why interest in barefoot shoes India continues to grow. Rather than relying on excessive support, minimalist footwear encourages the feet and lower legs to actively participate in movement, helping strengthen the body's natural systems over time.
Healthy footwear India should work with the body, not against it. By allowing the feet to move more naturally, minimalist footwear may help support balance, stability, and confidence in everyday movement.
Barefoot shoes are not a revolutionary technology. They are simply a return to natural movement and trust in the body's built-in capabilities.
Sometimes, the best barefoot shoes India are the ones that allow your feet to do what they were designed to do.
