Sports Shoes For Gym

Sports Shoes For The Gym

The world of footwear has transformed a lot over the last 20 years.
From wearing sports shoes everywhere to now specific shoes for specialised activities is the norm.
This is not just a consumer trend but is also backed by science in a lot of cases.

So if you are looking for sports shoes for the gym, here is what you need to keep in mind -

1. Running shoes are not good for the gym - traditional running shoes have high cushioning, an elevated heel, and a relatively unstable base. When you lift weights, unstable footing is the last thing you want. It is a sure way of getting injured.

2. Flat shoes require mobility work - Given we have worn shoes with elevated heels all our life, our achilles tendon gets shortened over time, and we lose ankle mobility. This means that being barefoot, or in barefoot shoes will require mobility work to be comfortable lifting weights.

3. Weightlifting shoes are great for heavy weights. They are flat, stable and hold the midfoot tight. A lot of lifting shoes also have an elevated heel to compensate for the lack of ankle mobility. The only downside however is the lack of toe usage.

Long term, the idea for a controlled environment like the gym should be to train barefoot as much as possible. Research suggests that the amount of data you get from the ground is super important for you to adjust your stance, and be more stable during lifts.
The deployment of the big toe and the arch muscle during lifts also helps in creating more power and working out stronger.

Humans have traditionally always been barefoot. Shoes are relatively new to our use. Regular shoes and sports shoes have put us at a disadvantage by stripping us of our mobility, proprioception and power generating capability.

When you are at the gym, it is not only important to train muscles to look big, but also to reignite these natural systems for a fuller life.

At Zen Barefoot, we make shoes that act like a middle ground. Shoes that allow you to splay your toes, stay flat on the ground, move and bend as needed with no compromise to safety.

Give barefoot shoes a shot, work on your mobility and regain your lost power.
