Tabi Shoes

Tabi Shoes - Function, Or Another Fad?

Tabi shoes or split toe shoes are not new. They’ve existed in a lot of eastern cultures for thousands of years in various shapes and forms.

They originated in Japan as socks to be worn with sandals and eventually evolved into complete shoes as well.

Tabi shoes are different from other shoes as the big toe has a different slot.
This allows for the big toe the ability to move independently, and in effect giving you more freedom of movement.

Tabi functionality has existed in the Indian context in varied forms.
Think of old school padukas or even the relatively modern thong chappals.
The idea has always been the same - utilizing the real powerhouse of the foot - the big toe.

A lot of newer brands are coming in with their own interpretations of the design, including the likes of Nike, but here is what they’re missing out on.

The shoes in the market today are too narrow. This defeats the purpose of a tabi shoe as the big toe is in a disadvantaged position.

So while tabi shoes by default are not a fad, what most brands pass as tabi designs are.

Here is what you should look for when considering Tabi shoes -

1. Flat soles
2. Wide shoe with ample space for your toe
3. Thin sole for sensory feedback from the ground
4. Zero heel drop for daily use

Enjoy the freedom of movement. In the end, good foot function means everything. Don’t lock your feet in any single position forever, however comfortable, it is literally the death of your feet.
